The Bahamas gained independence from Britain in 1973, and this series bridges the final years of colonial currency administration and the establishment of the Central Bank of the Bahamas, which formally took over monetary authority at independence. Coins dated 1973 from this type were struck in the same year the country ceased to be a Crown Colony — making the issue inadvertently a transitional artifact rather than a planned commemorative.
