The .600 fineness of this issue reflects a deliberate reduction from the earlier .800 silver standard, implemented as the colonial administration sought to align Straits coinage more closely with the depreciating value of silver on world markets and reduce the chronic problem of coins being melted for bullion profit. Edward VII died in May 1910, making this a two-year type by circumstance rather than design — the transition to George V coinage followed with minimal interruption from the Calcutta and Bombay mints that serviced the colony.
