Sutler scrip occupies a peculiar legal space in American monetary history — sutlers were licensed civilian merchants attached to military units, and the scrip they issued was redeemable only at their own store, giving them a near-monopoly on soldier spending within the regiment. Scott's Nine Hundred, formally the 9th New York Cavalry, was organized in 1861 under Colonel William Hadley, not a "Scott" — the popular name derived from General Winfield Scott's early influence on Union volunteer recruitment in New York.
A. Hoen & Company of Baltimore printed this during a period when the firm was producing considerable ephemera for both sides of the conflict, a geographic inevitability given Maryland's divided loyalties.
