Canadian Tire 'Money' occupies a genuinely odd corner of notaphily — a corporate loyalty scrip issued in denominations small enough to be functionally useless on their own, yet accumulated obsessively by Canadian households for decades. The program predates this 1974 issue considerably; paper coupons resembling banknotes had been handed out at Canadian Tire since 1958, deliberately styled to mimic genuine currency and printed by the same Ottawa firm responsible for much of Canada's real paper money.
Having the Canadian Bank Note Company produce these was not mere vanity. It created a psychological barrier against counterfeiting that most retail scrip programs never bothered with, and it worked — large-scale forgery of Canadian Tire notes was never a significant problem despite their wide distribution.
