Fiji's coinage was overhauled in 2012 when the military government of Frank Bainimarama introduced a redesigned series stripped of the British monarch's portrait — a deliberate break from the colonial imagery that had appeared on Fijian coins since independence. The beka mirimiri, a native blossom-bat, lent its name to this denomination as part of a broader push to anchor the currency in indigenous Fijian identity rather than Commonwealth tradition.
The nickel-plated steel composition replaced the earlier cupro-nickel, a cost-driven decision made as base metal prices climbed through the late 2000s.
