DeWitt General Hospital in Auburn, California was one of the large Army general hospitals established during World War II to handle the massive casualty load from the Pacific theater. Like many military installations of the period, it operated a semi-closed economy where scrip substituted for coin — partly to prevent currency drainage from the post, partly for simple accounting control over on-base spending.
The Camb#7949 reference places this within the broader Campbell catalog of U.S. military and institutional scrip. Pieces from DeWitt tend to surface infrequently; the hospital was decommissioned in 1946 and most scrip was either redeemed or discarded rather than preserved.
