| Obverse description | The obverse features the South African national coat of arms rendered in fine relief at the centre of the field, depicting a shield supported by two human figures with a secretary bird displayed above, a protea flower at the base of the shield, and wheat sheaves and elephant tusks as flanking supporters. The Khoisan motto '!KE E: |XARRA ||KE' (Unity in Diversity) appears on a ribbon scroll beneath the shield. The country name 'AFRIKA BORWA' (South Africa in Sesotho sa Leboa) is inscribed in two arcs flanking the coat of arms, with the mint's initials 'ALS' appearing below the shield. The date '2005' is positioned in the upper field above the coat of arms. The design was engraved by Arthur Sutherland. |
