Obverse description The obverse bears the coat of arms of South Africa rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field, depicting a secretary bird with outstretched wings above a shield supported by two San Bushmen figures, flanked by symmetrical stalks of wheat and a protea flower at the base. A crossed spear and knobkierie appear behind the shield. The date 2005 is inscribed above the arms, while the legend SOUTH AFRICA curves along the lower periphery. The engraver's initials ALS appear to the lower left of the arms, and the motto !KE E: /XARRA //KE is inscribed on the ribbon at the base of the shield.
