Trinidad and Tobago's coinage was redesigned following the country's transition to a republic in 1976, with the Central Bank assuming full control over currency issuance from the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority. The KM#53 ten-cent type was part of that post-republican series, minted in London at the Royal Mint during a period when Trinidad's oil boom was already beginning to falter under falling global petroleum prices.
