Suriname's small-denomination coinage of this period reflects the country's prolonged transition from Dutch colonial administration — formal independence didn't arrive until 1975, meaning pieces struck before that date were issued under a central bank that predated the sovereign state it would eventually serve. The Centrale Bank van Suriname was established in 1957, replacing the Surinaamsche Bank, and began issuing this series almost immediately.
The series ran without significant interruption through independence and well into the 1980s, an unusual continuity for a newly sovereign nation.
