French Indochina's silver coinage was authorized under the monetary reforms that followed France's consolidation of the territory in the late 1880s, with the piastre system designed to compete directly with the Mexican peso and Chinese sang that already dominated regional trade. The 10-centime denomination was struck at the Paris Mint, identifiable by its torch and cornucopia privy marks, across a compressed three-year window before weight and fineness specifications were revisited.
Lecompte distinguishes four varieties across these dates, primarily through differences in the engraver's signature placement and minor die characteristics.
