New Zealand decimalized on 10 July 1967, abandoning the pound system it had used since colonial times. The shilling dual-denomination was a deliberate concession to public anxiety — both values appeared on the coin so that people could mentally convert during the transition period. The dual labeling was dropped after 1969 once the Reserve Bank was satisfied the public had adjusted.
Machin's second portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced for the decimalization coinage, replaced Gillick's earlier effigy that had appeared on the pre-decimal issues.
