Andorra lacked its own coinage entirely until 2014, when it formally adopted the euro as a co-principality. These pre-euro issues were struck for collectors rather than general circulation — Andorra relied on French and Spanish currency in everyday commerce. The co-princes of Andorra are the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell, and it is the Bishop's ecclesiastical superior, the reigning Pope, who lends his name to this piece. Benedict XVI's pontificate began in April 2005, making 2006 an early issue of his tenure.
