Villamarchante is a small municipality in Valencia province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply gone. These local emissions, collectively known as billetes de necesidad, were produced under no central authority and with whatever materials the council had on hand. Thick card stock and a rubber stamp were often the entire production apparatus.

The Gari catalogue documents thousands of such issues; this one is among the more obscure. Survival rates for Valencian municipal notes of this period vary wildly by town.
