Vilanova de Bellpuig is a small municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Catalonia. This 10 céntimos note is one of thousands of emergency fractional issues produced by Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed almost immediately after the July 1936 uprising and local councils were left to fill the gap with whatever printing resources they had available.
Turró catalogues over 3,000 distinct municipal issues from this period. That this one survives at all is mildly remarkable given the card stock construction and the chaos of the war's final Catalan phase in early 1939.
