During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation prompted hundreds of Catalan municipalities, businesses, and cooperatives to print their own emergency paper fractionals. This note was issued by a barrel-making cooperative in Vilafranca del Penedès — a town whose economy ran on wine production — and would have circulated almost entirely within that narrow commercial community. The Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized this kind of local emergency scrip in 1937, giving it a thin legal footing that dissolved when Republican authority in Catalonia did.

Printed by Imprenta Cuscó, a local press. The AL catalog reference places it within the massive Andreu i Llopis corpus documenting Catalan Civil War emergency issues.
