10 Centimos Vilafranca del Penedès; Cooperativa Vilafranquina de Flequers

During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage — silver and copper had largely vanished from circulation by mid-1936. Catalonia responded with a flood of locally issued paper fractional currency, and this note is among the more unusual examples: produced not by a municipality but by a bakers' cooperative. The Cooperativa Vilafranquina de Flequers issued these 10 céntimos notes presumably to facilitate purchases among members and customers when change was simply unavailable.

Printed by Imprenta Ribas, a local press in the same town, the whole operation was entirely self-contained within Vilafranca del Penedès. That locality makes surviving examples genuinely parochial — circulation would have been narrow and brief.
