Vilafranca del Penedès was one of dozens of Catalan municipalities that issued fractional emergency currency during 1936–37, when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed under wartime hoarding and metal requisitions. These local emissions — paper moneda de necessitat — were legal within their issuing municipality only, redeemable in theory but often worthless within months as political control shifted.
Viladot, a Barcelona printing house, produced notes for numerous town councils simultaneously, which occasionally introduced plate mix-ups across the series. Worth checking against Turró carefully.
