Vilaboi was one of dozens of small Catalan municipalities that issued emergency fractional notes — *moneda de paper* — during the Spanish Civil War, when Republican-zone coinage simply disappeared from circulation. The CAM printing house in Barcelona produced these for numerous local councils simultaneously, working from near-identical layouts with only the issuing municipality and denomination varied between runs. The result was a kind of municipal currency franchise.
At 42 × 34 mm, this is among the smallest circulating paper issued anywhere in the conflict. The thick card stock was a deliberate choice — better wear resistance for notes expected to pass through many hands before any stabilization of supply.
