Torre de l'Espanyol is a small village in the Ribera d'Ebre comarca of Tarragona, and in 1937 its municipal council did what hundreds of Catalan and Spanish local authorities did during the Civil War: printed its own fractional currency to plug the catastrophic shortage of small change caused by hoarding and the collapse of normal coin supply. These monedes locals or vales were technically illegal under Republican monetary regulations but were tolerated out of necessity. Tipografía Ferrando in Reus produced notes for numerous surrounding municipalities during this period, which means the printing quality is consistent but the issuing authority — a village of perhaps a few hundred people — makes this among the more obscure entries in the Turró catalogue.
