Torà de Riubregós is a small municipality in the comarca of Segarra, Lleida. This 10 céntimos note is one of thousands of emergency paper issues — known collectively as *moneda local* or *paper moneda* — produced by Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's metallic coinage effectively vanished from circulation in 1936. Ajuntaments issued their own fractional currency out of necessity, not authorization, and the legal standing of these notes was always ambiguous.
The near-square format reflects the ad hoc nature of the issue — printed on whatever card stock was locally available rather than purpose-made banknote paper. Turró catalogued over 2,500 such issues from across Catalonia alone.
