During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — forced hundreds of Catalan agricultural cooperatives and local syndicates to print their own fractional currency. The Sindicat Agrícola de Santes Creus was one of scores of such bodies across the Conca de Barberà and Alt Camp regions that filled the vacuum with card-stock emergency issues in 1937. These were never legal tender in any formal sense; their acceptance depended entirely on local trust in the issuing body.

The Gari Montalà catalogue documents this piece as 1327-D, indicating at least four distinct variants for this denomination from this issuer alone — unusual specificity for a rural syndicate of modest means.
