Riudecols is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and this 10 céntimos note is one of the thousands of locally issued emergency fractional currency pieces — moneda local — that proliferated across Republican-held Catalonia during the Civil War after the effective disappearance of small-change coinage from circulation. The Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized municipal councils to issue these notes in 1937, and Riudecols, with a population that would have been well under a thousand at the time, was among the smaller issuing authorities.
The thick card format was typical of the smallest village issues, where print runs were tiny and sophisticated printing infrastructure was nonexistent.
