The 1928 Spanish pattern coinage was produced under Primo de Rivera's dictatorship during a period of active monetary reform, as the regime sought to modernize Spain's fractional coinage infrastructure. These trial pieces were struck in limited numbers for official evaluation and never reached general circulation — the political upheaval leading to the Second Republic in 1931 effectively shelved the broader reform program they were part of.
The Aureo reference places this squarely within a small, documented series. Pattern survivors in any condition are infrequently encountered outside specialist Iberian sales.
