Montblanc is a walled medieval town in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Tarragona province, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities, it was forced to print its own fractional currency after the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936 caused a near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. These locally issued emergency notes — collectively catalogued under the Turró reference system — were authorized under a Republican government decree permitting ayuntamientos to cover the gap.

Printed locally by Imprenta Gràfics rather than sent to Barcelona, this note never circulated beyond the immediate municipality. Most Catalan guerra civil paper of this type was demonetized and pulped after 1939.
