Menjíbar is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia, and this 10 céntimos note is one of the emergency local issues produced during the Spanish Civil War — a period when the Republican zone suffered acute small-change shortages as silver and copper coinage disappeared from circulation almost immediately after July 1936. Municipal councils, cooperatives, and trade unions across the Republican-held territories filled the gap with improvised paper and cardboard issues, often printed by local presses with minimal security features.
The Gari Mon catalogue remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War municipal issues, many of which survive in tiny quantities — Menjíbar's wartime administration was not large, and production runs for towns of this size were typically modest.
