Margalef de Montsant is a tiny municipality in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of similar villages across Republican-held Catalonia, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War when the withdrawal of metallic coin from circulation created a severe shortage of small change. The Generalitat de Catalunya sanctioned this wave of local paper money — commonly called "guerra civil local issues" — but production quality and survival rates vary enormously by locality. Margalef's population at the time was under three hundred, which tells you something about the likely print run.
