Los Gallardos is a small municipality in Almería province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional paper when coin hoarding and metal requisitions drained small change from circulation entirely. The Republican government had authorized local bodies to produce these vales or cartones from 1936 onward, which is why the cataloged universe of Spanish Civil War municipal issues runs into the thousands — most printed in tiny quantities on whatever stock was available.
