One of hundreds of locally issued emergency fractional notes produced across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War, when the hoarding of metal coinage created an acute shortage of small change almost immediately after July 1936. A newspaper kiosk issuing its own scrip is not unusual for the period — shops, bars, municipalities, and even individual market stalls printed their own substitute currency out of necessity, with no central authorization required or given.
The Aguilar-Loshuertos catalog reference places this firmly within the documented Lleida issues, though survival rates for commercial ephemera of this type are low. Most were redeemed locally or simply discarded once the war ended.
