La Riera de Gaià is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred in the 1930s, which makes the decision to issue emergency fractional currency here a useful illustration of how thoroughly the Republican zone fragmented its monetary supply during the Civil War. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized municipalities to print their own moneda local after the collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation in mid-1936, and hundreds of town councils — including ones this modest — took up the option.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona printed for multiple Tarragonès municipalities during this period, which means the production quality is reasonably consistent across the series even if the issuing authorities varied wildly in size and resources. Turró catalogues this as #2123.
