10 Centimos La Garriga; Cafe Circol de Recreu

La Garriga is a small municipality northeast of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War years, it saw its commercial establishments pressed into issuing emergency fractional currency when coin disappeared from circulation almost overnight after July 1936. The Café Circol de Recreu — a recreational social club of the sort common in Catalonia — was among the least likely institutions to find itself functioning as a monetary authority, yet necessity made it so.

These hyper-local Catalan war issues, collectively catalogued under the Ajuntaments i entitats locals series, were printed in enormous variety and almost universally tiny quantities. Survival is largely accidental.
