10 Centimos La Bisbal d'Empordà; Ateneu Pi i Margall

The Ateneu Pi i Margall was a workers' cultural association in La Bisbal d'Empordà — named for the 19th-century federalist politician and briefly President of the First Spanish Republic, Francisco Pi i Margall. During the Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities and local organizations issued their own fractional emergency currency as Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation. These ateneu-issued notes occupy an unusual corner of the series: unlike municipal ayuntamiento issues, they carry the political identity of the issuing body directly in the name.

AL#2007 places this among the documented Lleida and Girona-province local issues catalogued by Andreu and Lluís in the standard reference for Catalan guerra civil paper. La Bisbal d'Empordà, a market town in the Baix Empordà comarca, produced several such local issues across different denominations.
