Spain's First Republic lasted less than two years, from February 1873 to January 1874, collapsing through a succession of four presidents and a Carlist War that made coherent monetary policy nearly impossible. Pattern coinage from this period was struck in anticipation of a republican monetary system that never fully materialized — most proposed denominations never reached circulation.
