One of hundreds of local emergency issues produced across Catalonia during the Civil War years, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage left municipalities and collectives scrambling to fill the gap. The Sindicat Agrícola — an agricultural cooperative — had no business being a monetary authority, but the circumstances left little choice. These small cardboard tokens functioned as fractional currency within the immediate community, and their acceptance beyond the village boundary was essentially zero.
The square format is characteristic of many Catalan wartime emergency pieces and was almost certainly a practical decision: it simplified cutting from printed sheets.
