Esparreguera's cardboard emergency fractional issues were produced during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, when the Republic's central government lost effective control over currency supply and hundreds of Catalan municipalities began printing their own provisional substitutes. The Ajuntament d'Esparreguera, a small town in the Baix Llobregat, issued these cartonets alongside other denominations to keep local commerce functional after metallic coin vanished almost entirely from circulation through hoarding.
The Turró catalogue distinguishes at least two varieties for this denomination — #938 and #939 — likely differing in typeface, color, or paper stock rather than issuing authority.
