Dénia's wartime municipal issues belong to a chaotic episode in Spanish monetary history: the Republican government's failure to maintain small-change supplies during the Civil War forced hundreds of municipalities across Catalonia and the Valencian region to print their own fractional notes in 1936–37. Dénia's Consejo Municipal was among them, issuing locally produced emergency currency in denominations nobody would have bothered printing under normal circumstances.
At 54 × 38 mm, this is among the smallest pieces of paper currency issued during the conflict. The paper itself is often found fragile — a predictable result of wartime stock, not mishandling.
