One of hundreds of emergency fractional notes issued by Spanish municipal governments during the Civil War, when the Republic's coinage supply collapsed almost entirely after 1936. Castellbell i el Vilar is a small industrial municipality on the Llobregat river in Barcelona province, and its ayuntamiento — like many Catalan towns — turned to locally printed cardboard coupons to keep basic commercial transactions moving.
Turró catalogues this as #701, placing it within the dense Barcelona-province sequence. The thick card stock was a practical choice: paper this substantial survives casual handling better than thin currency stock, which mattered when redemption timelines were undefined and the war's outcome uncertain.
