Cabanes is a small municipality in Castellón province, and like hundreds of similar towns across Republican Spain, its local council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 to address an acute shortage of small change — a problem that worsened as hoarding stripped metallic coinage from circulation almost entirely in the early months of the Civil War. These hyper-local emissions were authorised under broad Republican fiscal decrees but produced with whatever materials and printing equipment the municipality had on hand, which accounts for the thick card stock and the reliance on an official stamp as the sole security feature.

Gari Mon#378-D suggests this is one of several known variants for Cabanes — the series designation implies differing stamps or overprints distinguishing issues within the same emission.
