Belmez is a small mining town in the province of Córdoba, and like dozens of Spanish municipalities it resorted to issuing its own emergency fractional paper during the Civil War — a direct consequence of the hoarding of metal coinage that began in 1936 as the Republic's silver reserves evaporated and small change essentially vanished from circulation.
