The Unió de Cooperadors de Barcelona was a consumer cooperative network with deep roots in the Catalan labour movement. When the military uprising of July 1936 triggered a revolutionary seizure of much of Barcelona's economy, the subsequent flight of coin from circulation forced hundreds of municipalities, unions, businesses, and cooperatives to issue their own fractional emergency currency — the so-called "moneda de necessitat." This note is one of thousands of such issues, but the cooperative origin is worth noting: the Unió was not a makeshift wartime body scrambling for legitimacy, it was an established institution pressed into an extraordinary monetary role.
Imprenta Martí, Marí y Cia. handled production locally, as with many of these emergency pieces.
