The Comité Económico de Cines was one of dozens of CNT-affiliated worker committees that collectively seized control of Barcelona's cinema industry in the weeks following the July 1936 military uprising. Under anarcho-syndicalist management, the city's movie theaters were collectivized outright — not nationalized, but run directly by the workers employed in them. This note is a product of that arrangement: small-denomination scrip issued to manage internal transactions during a period when the Republican government's authority over everyday commerce in Catalonia was, at best, theoretical.
The CNT collectivization of Barcelona's entertainment sector was remarkably thorough and lasted several years before Stalinist-backed pressure and the 1937 May Days began dismantling the experiment.
