São Tomé and Príncipe's dobra was redenominated in 1977 following independence from Portugal, then again in 2010 when the country revalued at 1,000 old dobras to one new dobra — the currency tied to the euro through a guarantee agreement with Portugal that remains in force. These small-denomination copper plated steel pieces were introduced as part of that revalued series, filling everyday transactional needs in one of the world's smallest and least-populated sovereign states, with a population under 200,000.
