Issued by a local merchants' association in the Aisne département, this piece belongs to the broad category of French canton-level emergency and commercial tokens that proliferated during and after World War I, when small-denomination coinage virtually disappeared from circulation. The national brass and bronze coins had been hoarded or melted, and the state was slow to respond — leaving chambers of commerce, municipal authorities, and trade unions to fill the gap themselves.
Aluminium was the practical choice: cheap, light, and undesirable to hoarders.
