Aanvullende informatie

The revolutionary upheaval of February 1848 that toppled Louis-Philippe and established the Second Republic triggered an immediate scramble to redesign French coinage. Competitive essay trials — essais de concours — were solicited from private engravers and medallists, with dozens of artists submitting proposals. Alard's copper trial was one of many that never advanced to official adoption.

The winning centimes design eventually went to Barre. Alard's piece survives as a collector artifact of that chaotic interlude, produced in extremely small numbers for jury evaluation only.
