Issued by the local merchants' and industrialists' cooperative in Saint-Gaudens, a small Haute-Garonne town better known for its marble quarries than its monetary history. Like hundreds of similar French chamber and syndicate tokens struck between 1914 and the early 1920s, this piece filled the vacuum left by hoarded bronze and nickel state coinage during and immediately after the First World War. The Banque de France's inability to supply adequate small change forced municipalities and commercial associations across France to issue their own fiduciary tokens under a tacit official tolerance.
The El Monedero reference 10.5 distinguishes this specific syndicate issue from overlapping local emissions of the same period.
