The provisional government that took power after the February 1848 revolution faced immediate pressure to redesign French coinage, stripping it of Orleanist royal imagery. The result was a flood of competing pattern submissions — Malbet's tin submission being one of dozens evaluated before the definitive Cérès type was adopted for the Second Republic's bronze centimes.
Tin was an unusual choice for a pattern metal, selected to approximate weight and feel rather than for any production intent.
