| 正面描述 | Allegorical effigy of the Republic facing left, crowned with a wreath supported by children flanking her head, rendered in the neoclassical style characteristic of Barre's work. The legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE curves along the upper periphery, while the engraver's signature BARRE J. appears in the lower field beneath the bust. The composition reflects the artistic sensibility of the Second Republic period, combining classical drapery with symbolic republican iconography. |

The February Revolution of 1848 overthrew Louis-Philippe within days, leaving France without a settled monetary identity almost overnight. The provisional government commissioned multiple competing designs for a republican coinage, and Jean-Jacques Barre — then chief engraver at the Monnaie de Paris — submitted several pattern proposals. This piece is one of them, never adopted, surviving now almost exclusively in institutional and specialist collections.
