| Beschrijving voorzijde | Left-facing laureate and draped bust of Marianne, personification of the French Republic, wearing an oak and laurel wreath in her flowing hair. The legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs around the periphery, divided on either side of the effigy. The engraver's signature MONTAGNY appears in small letters at the base of the truncation. A fasces motif is visible at the lower truncation, symbolizing republican unity. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine neoclassical detail, characteristic of mid-19th century French medallic art. |

The February Revolution of 1848 forced an immediate coinage rethink. The new Second Republic needed to distance itself visually from Orleanist iconography, and the Monnaie de Paris responded by soliciting multiple competing designs — Montagny was among several sculptors submitting trial pieces that year, most of which never advanced beyond pattern stage. Jean-François Domard, Joseph-François Domard, and others were in the same competition. Few of Montagny's submitted projects were adopted.
VG 3147 places this as the second of his pattern submissions for the denomination, distinguishing it from at least one other Montagny proposal catalogued separately by Vinchon-Gadoury.
