Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Marianne, the allegorical personification of the French Republic, engraved by Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois. The effigy is rendered in low relief within a recessed central disk, surrounded by a broad flat rim characteristic of essai coinage. Marianne wears a Phrygian cap and flowing hair, with fine detail in the facial features and drapery. The field is plain, with no encircling legend on this pattern issue.
