The upheaval of February 1848 — which toppled Louis-Philippe and proclaimed the Second Republic — immediately threw French coinage into institutional chaos. The Monnaie de Paris solicited competing designs from multiple engravers, resulting in a documented flurry of pattern emissions before the definitive republican types were settled. Boivin's submission was one of several that never advanced to currency production.
The Mazard reference places this among a small cluster of copper essay pieces from that competitive window, with the VG variant notation suggesting minor die differences exist within the type itself.
